Letter to Last Week

Let’s just say, you had a good thing going

You did what you needed to do

Your lists, your calendar, your tasks

Way to go, you saw them all through

You should’ve seen yourself

It was something to behold

You had focus, drive, determination

Even some fun, yet you remained controlled

Now, please don’t be scared,

But I do hope you enjoyed it

Because this week feels different

yet somehow just as joyous

This week, I’m not “Nose to the ground”

or “Rubber to the road”

I’m not “Eyes on the prize”

I’m more “Go with the flow”

This week, I’m “Trust the process”

This week I’m “Play it by ear”

I’m “flying by the seat of my pants”

“Whatever happens, happens” right here.

Last week, this would have scared me

this laid back style, so laissez-faire

As if the only way to be successful

Is from point A to B, from here to there

I used to give up at times like this

when my focus would start to blur

my drive would downshift to a cruise

roaring determination becomes a purr

A sign, I thought it was

did I now know what I was getting into?

was I lazy or unrealistic?

did I bite off more than I could chew?

From point A to B they should’ve gotten me

these lists, these tasks, and calendars

But these days I’m thinking there’s nothing wrong

with being just a little haphazard

Just a little chaotic

with just a touch of “c’est la vie”

Because “the world is your oyster”

when it’s “hmm let’s just see”

The moon has different phases

but no one bats an eye

with every change of her face

she still shifts the tides

Why shouldn’t I go from full to crescent and back?

Why shouldn’t I “ride the waves”

Sometimes it isn’t structure or schedule

but creativity and room to breathe that I crave

Our best looks different every day

and that shouldn’t be discredited

because by meeting ourselves where we are

there is much to be inherited

Inherited from the unknown

Inherited from the trust

that somehow, someway

something incredible will come from us

This week I’ll remember

there is treasure hidden within each phase

And when it comes to doing things

there is more than one way

Yes, I’ll hit my deadlines

Yes, I’ll get things done

But this poem only exists

because I can “take things as they come”

So remember that each phase

has its own unique value

for you might just surprise yourself

with what “going with the flow”

can bring out of you.

See you next week,

Que Sera Sera
